Prof. Dr. Hakan Gür, President of the Department of Sports Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine of Uludağ University, said that the interaction between the shoes and the floor will be one of the most important determiners of the loads on the feet and legs.
He says, if there is no chance of making a difference on the floor where people are doing sports, it very important to choose a pair of shoes suitable for the forms of the feet, stepping characteristics and the characteristics of the floor. He also adds that choosing suitable shoes for the floor will reduce the risk of being injured.
Stating that different shoes are manufactured for different sports branches and different floors, Mr. Gür says that the vibration reflecting from the floor is reduced by means of the small pads called “air, gel etc.” and placed at different point on the sole of the shoes. Thanks to these, the loads on the bone and joint cartilages are reduced.
“Try by jumping and running”
Hakan Gür listed the points to be considered while buying sports shoes as follows: “ Examine the hard support in the middle part of the shoe, the pads on the heel and the front part, the properties the materials to be used and the features of the stitches before deciding to buy shoes. Backs of the shoes should prevent the feet from going outwards and inwards; the front parts should have just the opposite features. Put the shoes on in the store, jump and run with them. Keeping them on your feet for 5-10 minutes will help you decide easily. The shoe should not be too tight for your feet and not too big, either. When you put a new pair of shoes on for the first time, do not run a distance more than 5 kms .”
